Rangefinder Magazine reviews the Fujifilm FinePix E900 and writes - ''I’ve recently been trying the Fujifilm FinePix E900, a point-and-shoot camera with a sensor containing no less than 9 megapixels. In many ways this could be considered overkill for a consumer camera, but it does indicate the amazing quality that is obtainable from a camera with a sensor that is only 1/17 the physical size of a full-frame 35mm sensor. Put in perspective, it would result in a 154-megapixel sensor if the same size pixels were used in the Canon EOS-5D or 1Ds Mark II.' Back in the sixties and seventies the main manufacturers produced a very nicely machined type of camera. They all had a compact rugged durable metal body, a mechanical rangefinder, mechanical lens shutter, fixed fast lenses and they featured manual as well as autoexposure modes. Most models cost as much as today's point-and-shoots and so many of them have been sold. Today they can be picked up cheaply on flea markets or eBay. The most popular representatives are the Minolta HiMatic 7sII, the Konica Auto S2, the Olympus Trip 35 and the Canon Canonet G-III QL17 being the most advanced model imho. |

It meets all of your requirements, nice fast 40mm f/1.7 lens, manual and Tv modes (the meter only works in Tv mode, but you can get a reading and choose a lower or higher aperture), quiet.. Prices range from $50 for as-is-may-need-the-light-seals-replaced. You don't need a Bessa to try out a film rangefinder. However, Canonet purchases are known to lead to Bessa purchases, so you are forewarned. There are also the Minolta, Konica, and Yashica fixed-lens RFs, which sometimes go for a bit less then the Canonets, since people tend to talk up the Canonet a lot. If you already process B&W film and are thinking about yielding on the digital point, one of the fixed-lens RFs is definitely an option, and you can get a nice Canonet for less then a 40mm lens for a Bessa. Sales for the G-III started in 1972. Canon produced a chrome as well as an all black version. Today the black version is hard to find. Expect to pay € 50 up to € 100 for clean chrome bodies. I payed about € 75 for mine in mint condition with case and strap. Once you are used to it it's simple and fast. You start the meter simply by uncovering the lens. With the G-III you select a shutter speed and the camera displays the metered aperture in the viewfinder (shutter speed priority). |
